Beyond the Curtain - Trans and Non-Binary Inclusion Workshop

OVERVIEW
Developed by the founder of Dead Name Theatre (DNT), Lee Stone, and DNT's founding dramaturg, Max Cameron Fearon, “Industry Inclusion for Trans and Non-Binary Artists” will inspire the beginning or continuation of conversations on how to make our spaces safer for gender-marginalized people. This workshop covers a wide range of topics including:
- Understanding Our Context
- Trans Vocabulary 101
- Practicing Gender Neutral Language
- Accessibility & Gender Neutral Washrooms
- Working Together & How To Take Action
These topics and conversations will culminate in the ultimate question; “What does a trans-affirming space look like?
This workshop is the first step towards standing in solidarity with trans and non-binary people. It is designed as EDI consultation for companies, organizations, and individuals who have a desire to engage trans and non-binary people in an intentional way but do not yet know how or are in the beginning stages of developing this practice. Attendees from all walks of life, with any level of knowledge or experience on this topic are welcome to attend.Trans and non-binary attendees of the workshop are encouraged to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable.
OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES
Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how to develop a more affirming space for trans and non-binary people. Participants will also be provided with a list of resources for continued research. They will feel more empowered to make active changes in their workspace as it relates to trans/non-binary inclusion. They will have more confidence in using gender-neutral pronouns and language. And finally, participants will have a more nuanced understanding of the root(s) of transphobia and how it shows up in daily life.
TRAINER BIOGRAPHY
Lee Stone (they/them)
Artistic Director & Producer, Dead Name Theatre
| Lee Stone (they/them) is a director, producer, and educator. They were born and raised on Chumash and Tongva land in Southern California and educated on Kānaka Maoli land at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (2013). As a queer/polyamorous, trans/non-binary, white settler/immigrant of German, Jewish-Ukrainian, and Armenian descent, Lee has spent a lifetime using theatre, storytelling, and education to resist the cishet, white colonial project. Their neuro-spicy passions include intersectional feminism and the history of resistance across Turtle Island. In 2022 Lee was awarded the Toronto Arts Council, Newcomer and Refugee Artist Mentorship Grant for the purpose of founding Dead Name Theatre, which uplifts and centres the voices, experiences and talents of trans, non-binary, and queer creatives in Toronto.
